Spurs are measured from the point to along the outside curve to the point parallel with where the spur is exposed on the leg. Measurement is made to the nearest 1/16”. A photograph is required if your bird has multiple spurs on either or both legs. Spurs equal to or exceeding 1-1/2 inches require a second witness, and must include photographs showing measurement (include a ruler). Measurements are converted to decimal 0.0000, and totaled accordingly. See following example:
Beards are measured from where they protrude (not to include fleshy meat beyond beard strands) from the skin to the longest strand (tubular feathers). A photograph is required if your bird has multiple beards. Measurement is made to the nearest 1/16”. Beards equal to or exceeding 12 inches require a second witness, and must also include photographs showing measurement (include a ruler). Measurements are converted to decimal 0.0000, and totaled accordingly. See example below:
Weights are to be measured on a certified scale to the nearest ounce, and before field dressing, intact, and whole. Weights equal to or exceeding 22 pounds require a second witness and proof of measurement. Bird must be weighed on scales inspected and certified as accurate for trade by the State Department of Agriculture (or equivalent government agency,) or have Calibration traceable to National Bureau of Standards, and a weight coupon or signed document, or photo of weighing on certified scale presented as proof.
Weights measuring below stated thresholds above require scales to measure to ounce/0.0625lb increments with accuracy meeting or exceeding 0.02lbs. All weights measured to nearest ounce/0.0625lb. Some contests weigh after field dressing to promote cooling down the meat, and minimize spoilage. The SBP record system will note weights taken after field dressing. Weight is converted to decimal 0.0000, and totaled accordingly.

Record submissions are categorized as Non-Typical if the gobbler has multiple beards, and or multiple spurs. Gobblers with both multiple beards and spurs are considered rare and only a few are recorded across North America. Spurs and beards are measured in the same manner as in typcial category submissions, successive beards and or spurs are added and tabulated in combined totals. It is critical to determine if beards are acutally seperate beards or split at the base of the skin
